Purchase of bumper moulding Plastics

plastics for bumper mould can be bought in one of two ways:
Buying directly from basic materials producers provides the obvious benefits of lower initial materials costs. (For companies already involved in thermosetting plastics fabrication, this is often an obvious choice.) Also, a variety of different compounds can be produced from a relatively narrow inventory of base materials. On the other hand, formulating within the shop increases the initial capital investment required, in that facilities must be provided for physical testing, formulating and mixing and precise quality control. Such a shop must be staffed by plastics engineers (or chemical engineers) well versed in plastics technology— all the way from formulation and processing to design. Although raw materials suppliers will provide substantial technical service, shop personnel must have a great deal of basic technical knowledge. Compounds bought from a competent formulator are already mixed and packaged to meet specific tool needs. Given the requirements for a particular tool, a premixed compound can be supplied.

A benefit that cannot be minimized is the competent technical service available from such formulators. Most competent formulators’ field engineers have had tooling experience plus specialized training in the use of tooling plastics. Although costs of such formulations are obviously higher than the costs of buying the raw materials, the additional expense can be well worth it, particularly for those new to the plastics tooling field. Buying from formulators also has the advantage of providing one source for both plastics materials and auxiliary supplies, such as bushings and inserts. Often the most economical procedure may be to buy basic materials in bulk for the majority of tools, and buy custom formulations for specific jobs where formulating may be difficult or unusual. Before deciding which approach to take in purchasing materials, the pros and cons of each method should be carefully weighed.
A sound recommendation for anyone starting out in plastic car bumper mould design and fabrication is to “start at the bottom.” Some success with smaller, less complex bumper mould may put one in a better position to decide which approach to take. Although far from the “black magic” it once was, formulating is a complex art. Various properties of the liquid resins can be used effectively in controlling the quality and nature of the cured material. For example, density, viscosity, flash point and epoxy equivalents directly affect physical properties of cured epoxy resins.
In addition to the type and quantity of fillers, modifiers and catalysts or hardeners used, the procedures and techniques used to compound the material may affect cured properties. For example, factors which may affect properties include
The complex nature of formulating should not be a deterring factor in deciding to formulate your own materials. However, before deciding to do so, there should be an understanding of what is involved. In considering the economics of formulating versus buying ready-made formulations, it should be kept in mind that materials cost is a small proportion of the cost of a finished tool.
